Description

Wilhelm Farm produces fruit and vegetables for sale seasonally at their roadside stand. The Granby Land Trust holds a conservation easement on the property, which precludes future development of the farm’s 48 acres. The partnership between Wilhelm Farm and the Granby Land Trust demonstrates the role working landscapes play in maintaining Granby’s open space and rural atmosphere.

History

Wilhelm Farm was purchased in 1936 by Ann’s grandfather, Oscar Wilhelm. With help from his sons, Fred and Lloyd, Oscar rebuilt pasture fences, established fruit and vegetable gardens, and planted trees. In 1956, Oscar received one of the 10 original Tree Farm licenses for Connecticut. Fred Wilhelm assumed stewardship of the farm in 1962. Over the years, the farm provided a mix of fruit, vegetables, milk, meat, eggs and lumber for family use and for sale. In 1990 Ann began a small market garden, and in 2003 she and her husband, Bill, bought the farm from Fred and Edith. Ann continues to raise fruits and vegetables, while Bill maintains the woodlands and pastures. Their sons, Russell and Ricky, pitch in wherever it’s needed. Fred and Edith still help on the farm, planting, harvesting, and preserving food for both households. The farm offers a beautiful glimpse of Granby’s past, while contributing to Granby’s current ambience. It will continue to do so through the generosity of Fred and Edith Wilhelm and their donation of the property’s development rights to the Land Trust.
